Here's my take away from today's session:
Professional learning plans are a great thing for students and teachers. I welcome the paradigm shift. There are many dynamic teachers doing wonderful things out there, but this new shift will help focus and organize the efforts of teachers to create a meaningful framework for the students we serve. I hope that the students will have authentic ownership for this process and will come through a PLP with a good sense of what their strengths are, how they learn best and understand how to transfer their school learning into real life experiences. I believe that this work is important and that with a positive community of engaged educators that we can make this a meaningful process for both the students and ourselves as educators.
What do we need to do from here:
1. Discuss how we envision this working for the preK-12 school community. It seems like an early focus with middle level students is a very good plan. (could preK-4 create non-digital portfolios, which have evidence that is gathered and curated in a file?)
2. Are student goals varied in theme? Or do we select a few key areas for students to create goals?
i.e. : academic, social/civic, personal?
3. We will need to create a PLP format for Cabot that makes sense for us.
4. I'm still trying to understand how we are going to mesh grade point averages with learning proficiencies. Is there a point where GPAs will fade away?
